Building Across Borders: Finding an Experienced Steel Fabrication Partner for Sub-Saharan Africa
Expanding operations across African borders presents a landscape of immense opportunity, yet the logistical reality of exporting steel structures can be daunting for even the most seasoned developers. Whether you are spearheading a mining project in the Copperbelt, developing a large-scale poultry facility in East Africa, or erecting a retail complex in a burgeoning SADC urban hub, the structural integrity of your project depends on the experience of your steel fabrication partner.
With 30 years of experience and over 1,500 projects completed, we have refined a process specifically designed to navigate the complexities of structural steelwork and export readiness.
Why the Right Export Partner is Your Greatest Asset
Choosing a steel construction partner in South Africa involves more than comparing quotes. In a cross-border context, an inexperienced supplier can lead to costly delays at customs or incorrect documentation. B&T Steel acts as a single accountable partner, integrating design, detailing, and fabrication into a seamless workflow.
Our 12,000 m² fabrication facility in Delmas, Mpumalanga, South Africa is equipped with advanced CNC technology to ensure every steel piece is manufactured to exacting tolerances. This precision ensures that when the finished, project-specific steel leaves our workshop or is collected from our premises, it is ready for accurate assembly on your remote site.

Understanding Export Logistics
Exporting steel structures requires a deep understanding of the regulatory environment. B&T Steel simplifies this by managing the critical “paper trail” that often stalls projects:
SADC Certification: We manage the full SADC certification process to help facilitate smoother trade and preferential treatment within the region.
Export Documentation: We provide all required transport and shipping documents necessary for border crossings.
Significant Logistical Advantage: by managing our own in-house logistics fleet we ensure that the delivery of finished structures is handled by experienced teams who understand the specific requirements of structural steel transport.
Project-Specific Collection: Our premises in Delmas, Mpumalanga, serve as the central hub where clients collect their finished, fabricated steel, custom-engineered for their specific project requirements.
Industry Compliance: We are proud members of the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) and the International Steel Fabricators (ISF) of Southern Africa.
Decoding INCOTERMS: Who is Responsible for What?
When negotiating an international steel project, understanding Incoterms® is vital for defining risk and responsibility. In many cases, particularly for projects in neighboring countries, clients prefer to manage their own long-distance logistics, making EXW a common choice for those collecting from our Delmas facility.
EXW (Ex Works)
The seller makes the goods available at their premises (our Delmas workshop). The buyer bears all costs and risks of moving the finished project steel from our facility to the final destination.
FOB (Free On Board)
The seller delivers the goods on board the vessel nominated by the buyer at a named port. The risk passes once the goods are loaded.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight)
The seller pays the costs and freight to bring the goods to the named port of destination, though the risk transfers once the goods are on board the vessel.
Managing Risks and Long-Distance Planning
Distance introduces variables, including weather, border congestion, and clearing agent efficiency. B&T Steel mitigates these risks through disciplined project management and advanced technology:
3D Modeling (Tekla Structures): We create accurate 3D models using full BIM integration, which minimises errors and enables collaborative planning before a single beam is cut.
Internal Quality Inspection: Before collection, our internal quality inspectors perform a comprehensive check with the client to ensure the fabricated structure meets every specification.
Scalable Capacity: With a workshop capacity of up to 400 tonnes of light/medium structural steel and 600 tonnes of heavy structural steel per month and a night shift that adds 50% more capacity, we can meet the demands of large-scale international projects.
